Finding Purpose through Community

New York Basket Brigade Sheila Blackmond

Years ago, I found myself deeply moved by a news report. It featured a touching tale of a home makeover done in the spirit of the holiday season. Rich Kuepper, a stalwart member of the NYC Basket Brigade, and his dedicated team from the NYPowerteam transformed the house of Sheila Blackmond, a resilient grandmother who had recently taken custody of her six grandchildren after a heart-wrenching tragedy. Watching this gesture of goodwill on the news, I felt an overwhelming sense of belonging. I had found my community.

For those unfamiliar with Sheila’s story, she became the guardian of her six grandchildren after the tragic loss of their mother. When I heard about her situation, it resonated deeply, reminding me of the power of community, compassion, and the real essence of the holidays.

It was during this time that Rich Kuepper, first learned of Sheila’s predicament. While making a NYC Basket Brigade delivery to her home for Thanksgiving, he felt an instant connection to her strength and resilience. Under his leadership, her Bronx home underwent a $30,000 transformation, turning it into a warm, welcoming space for her and the children for the December holiday season.

But the story doesn’t end there.

Sheila Blackmond, touched and empowered by the support she received, chose to channel her gratitude into action. She has been volunteering with the NYC Basket Brigade year after year, embodying the spirit of paying it forward. Today, we are thrilled to share a touching video of Sheila. Hear her journey, her commitment, and her unwavering spirit.
